Knowing more and more about what litter does to our planet (besides making it look like a garbage dump), why do some people still litter when it doesn't take much to find the nearest garbage bin?

People intentionally litter because they're lazy, self-absorbed, and they can't think beyond themselves and their own immediate needs.

Meaning, they have no concept that their action have an impact on the people or environment around them, and they usually don't care to know that, anyway.

To tell you the truth, I have heard many people say that it gives others a job. Well, if others are so desperate for work, let them clean up the mess that already exists because there sure is lot of it. It is plain and simple laziness that keeps people from putting their trash where it belongs. They try to say that everyone does it but that is a cop out for their own laziness. Come on people, wise up and use the trash cans instead of being lazy. Do some cleaning for a change and put your waist to work by disposing of your waste. Honestly, you will lose weight if you try to use your energy to find the nearest garbage can. Thank you for your question.

This is an excellent question. People are very self-centered these days. There seems to be very little immediate consequences for their behavior. I used to hear of people actually being fined for littering. Now, I never hear of that ticket being given. There is a street, in my neighborhood, that is not fenced. It is private but is not inhabited. This area is used as a private dumping ground - everything from bags of trash to appliances. I've even seen a boat left in the field. It astounds me and I get depressed when I go by there. I have stopped driving down that street. Of course, I have ideas on how to curb the activity, but, it would take a joint effort on behalf of the police, courts, and public. Surveillance cameras could be set up, like the cameras at the intersections or the freeways. Fines could be enforced based on the registered owners of the vehicles which these things are being thrown out of. The public could "police" themselves by jotting down license plate numbers (like neighborhood watch). I teach my kids to place litter in a trash can. I don't even let them through gum out of the window. They think I'm "old-fashioned." That's okay.
Anyway, I find that the lack of respect and lack of common courtesy are the two greatest reasons for most negative things that happen in this world.

Because some people don't care about the earth. They don't care if the trash can is so close it touches their nose. If they are down right lazy or mean. They will throw it out no matter what. Then if they are in a car, instead of waiting for a rest stop. They rather decorate the road with it.
Like I said, they don't care, as long that their car don't have trash in it. We can have a bunch of trash picker, trucks, cans, and everything else. Still we will found a tin can, paper product, and maybe a dead body on the side of the road.

What does litter do to our planet? Trash is like people. They come from and go back to the earth.Did you ever stop to think that it is the concentration of litter combined into one place that causes problems?Would you rather step on a piece of paper or fall into a pile of garbage?

The fact that there is public property. People don't litter on private property because they're afraid some guy with a shot gun will chase after them or yell at them. Even then, private property is better taken care of than public property, so we see litter there less. Plus, when everyone owns public property: no one does.

I don't know, Lesley. I've wonderred that too.

I've come to the conclusion that many are stupid lazy ignoramuses who don't think it will come back to bite them. I've lost track of how many times I've wished I had a magic wand that I could wave to make all the litter in the world jump up and deposit itself in the homes and vehicles of the ones that threw it out. I kind of figure *that* would be just a little bit difficult to ignore!

Its a tossup to me - laziness, apathy or just plain stupidity as others said before - people who throw lit cigarettes out the window also kill me. But the whole littering thing is a big pet peeve of mine as well.. Some people just don't seem to get the big picture of what they are doing
