My girlfriend and I recently broke up and we were living together, with the cats. I got a new place and got the cats in the "divorce". Att any rate, she's gone and the cats who used to spend more time with her than me, are adjusting to the new situation and apartment. Here's the problem. It's been 2 months and I can't, for the life of me, get the the little guy to **** in the litterbox. He'll pee in it, daintly step over it and jump out. Won't bury it. Ever. But he only shits everywhere but the litterbox. It's incredible. The carpet, right next to the litterbox, or in the same room, but across it. Sometimes in the kitchen or the bathroom. Never in my bedroom or the living room, tho. I guess that's his kingdom. The other cat? No problems. Before you answer, let me save you time by telling you I've tried everthing you could think of off the top of your head. Think about it. Everyday, multiple times while I'm at work, for two months. I've had time at this. Please helf me from going insane

Several small litterboxes, with dividers for privacy, believe me it will wotk if the cat does not have to over-mark the other cat's mess.

Why don't you tell you lazy ***** of an ex girlfriend to take the problem cat!?
No but really lock that cat in the bathroom with his litterbox until he gets used to using it. Or put him in a dog kennel big enough for the litter box , food water and a little walking space. If he pisses and shits everywhere it's in his space. Cats are clean freaks he'll get over that mess in a week!

I just got a new kitten and i did some research on the Internet and it works! First off pay attention to ware your cat is going to the bathroom the most and put the litter box there. You might want to get Fresh Step litter that works the best! Her/His litter box needs to be in a quite place where she sleeps. Never put the litter box by her food or she will start eat ting it. Put it in another room. If you have two cats you are suppose to have two different litter boxes. Also try to catch her in the act and when you do hurry her to the little box and put her in it. Then when you get home or its at night keep on putting her in it. It says that the littler box should be on a hard top floor like the kitchen or bathroom ,but that didn't work for ours! You need to put her in the litter box and take her paws. I know this might sound weird ,but act like you are playing with her in the litter box. Take her paws and act like you are digging with her.

Which one of you took care of the cats?
Perhaps you need two boxes.
Did you change brands of litter?
When was the last time the litter box was changed or cleaned?
Is their water clean?
How long are you gone?
Place newspaper next to the box.
My cats only do this when the box is full or the litter is old.
When you get home spend a few minutes with them each, they could be lonely.
Carry treats which you dispense when you are sure they have NOT left any surprises around the place.
Good Luck!
Oh and how is it you got the cats, if they spent more time with her? Sounds like she should have gotten them.
Even though they are animals they miss her presence and a familiar space.
They do not have the luxury of expressing how they feel, but they feel .. they really do.

Cats are definitely defiant creatures and they have attitude problems when changes in their routines occur. You can try another litter box but if they shared one before it should not be a problem now. I would say to buy a small all wire crate that is large enough to put a small litter pan and a relaxing bed in and keep him in there during the day while you are at work. When you come home if he uses the box and his "home is clean" then bring him out and give him a nice treat and love on him a lot. I have a male and female and when the male gets sneaky and gets out of the house the female gets mad like we let him out and poops in the bathtub. We have moved their box to the screened in porch and let them enjoy the fresh air and the boy is happy with his "outside" and the girl is happy since he stays within the house. You have to make them see you are doing the best for them and praise them well for doing right and have lots of patience because it may take a while for him to get over his love of your ex. How long does it take yo you to grieve for the loss of a loved one???Just remember that.....Good Luck

number one ask a vet if there is any help, always pick up the poop as fast as you can, and use one of the pet odor sprays to help disguise the smell so he wont be drawn to one spot. Your cat is like a child and hes emotionally unglued at the seperation. You can get medication for emotional problems in animals but i dont know how well they work. there are surely pet web sites that discuss emotional problems and may even allow for you to email them with questions. I had similar problems with tiger only she only did it next to the box so i just put a carpet remanant under the box and could change it after a while. she continued this the last ten years of her 21 year life. It started after i took in a new cat with a broken leg. I wish you the best. Patience may be the only answer.

It sounds to me like your cat is marking his new territory (even if your cat is a she this is still likely). Be very careful in choosing your cleaning products. Actually the best cleaner to use is plain water and plenty of it. Get a bucket with cool water and a rag and blot the spot with lots of water. Once you think it's clean get a fresh bucket and blot again with a different rag. Then blot with a dry rag as best you can and allow to air dry. Cat urine smells very similar to ammonia which is in most commerical cleaners. So the cat might think another cat is trying to broach in on his new space. Generally a cat will not defecate or spray where they eat, so I would try cleaning the spot, and then once dry, placing a dish of food where you cleaned. This will send a clear message to the cat that he is not to use the bathroom there. More than one litter box would be good too. Try the automated Littermaid they are self cleaning and fabulous. Absolutely worth every penny.
To keep yourself from going insane, how about purchasing a cage or confining the cat to one area?
Good Luck, please don't kill the cat.

You must really love cats to put up with that for 2 months, if it were my cat it would already be living outside. Im sure you have tried this but, throw the turds in the litter box and throw the cat in there with them. maybe he will get the hint to poop in there. And of course make sure the litter box is always clean because they hate a dirty litter box. If the room the litter box has linoleum floors try mopping the floor with bleach water to remove the poop smell off of it where hes been shi**ing day in and day out. maybe that is some of the reason why he is doing it. DID HE DO THIS BEFORE YOUR GIRLFRIEND MOVED OUT???? If he didnt I would kindly send the crappin cat her way, maybe he misses her and hates you and is being spiteful. good luck

Put him in a cage.. this worked for my dog that would potty right as I pulled in the driveway and was minutes from being let out. That cage became his 'home' or 'safe area' and he learned to hold it until I could let him out. It is sized for him, but there are cages for cats that are realtively big and can hold a cat litter box. He is also probably pissed and upset about your ex not being around anymore and the only attention he is recieving is when he does soemthing bad, ie. potties outside the box. What he is getting is negative attention and not positive and it is hard to change habits of some cats. I wish you luck!

Have you tried a second box? I used to have two cats and I had to have two boxes. My male only urinated on one box and defecated in the other. IF the box got dirty he wouldn't use it at all....
Second thing is to change the litter. I mean, try different kinds. Maybe he doesn't like the smell....
Did he do this before you broke up? If not, it could be an anxiety reaction. My male would urinate on me in the middle of the night when he was ill...
Have you had him checked by the vet?
Good luck!

put a litter box in each of the rooms u have and keep the 1 or 2 that he uses the most...or this might seem a little crazy but teach him how to use the toilet...this is how...put plastic wrap over the toilet tight so it doesnt fall into the toilet and tape it ...then put litter on the plastic wrap and if u see his..."droppings" on the litter keep using less and less litter on the plastic wrap and after a month or 2 take the litter off and he will be using the toilet!
