My grandmother did it all the time, but when I had some friends/family over for a BBQ, one of them went beserk when I left the butter out for the corn. I always keep mine in the fridge,(just because it's too hot out) but when I need it for bread or something, I take it out to soften it. Can someone tell me if I am poisioning people with my "deadly" butter? See? this is why family & friends don't mix!! lol

If you are worried about your butter spoiling, a product is made called a butter bell. A softened stick of butter is packed into a bell shaped, usually ceramic vessel. This "bell" is then inverted and placed in a base which has water in it. This forms a seal, allowing the butter to sit out, in theory, longer than butter stored in a regular dish.

Yes, you can leave it out quite often, unless it is very hot and would tend to melt, etc. It also depends upon how much you go through in a week. It is not uncommon in English and Irish households to leave the butter dish on the table all the time. My family always do.

If you leave it out for days on end it may not be a good thing but if it's just for a few hours or 1 day I doubt that anyone is going to fall over dead if they eat it. Butter I think has active cultures in it like sour cream and yougart and that is why they say to keep it refrigerated.

Butter has milk in it and it sours if left out too long. It also melts easily. It is not advisable to leave it at temperatures above 43 degrees for long periods of time

It takes a LONG time for butter to spoil from being left out. Don't worry. Plus, you'll know by the unbelievably sour taste if it does go bad.

You can leave butter out. It would take a very long time for it to go bad. Your grandparents probably had one stick left out all the time and it didn't kill them.

yes you can leave butter out. did you know that you can also leave ketchup out. my mother in-law told me that. the restaraunts do. always look for "refridgerate after opening" on a label, sometimes it's hard to spot so look carefully. butter and ketchup doesn't have it.
