Etiquette masks ones character. It is there only to make the upper most classes feel comfortable. Because it is a reflection of the attitudes the upper class feel they should act it became popular among the lower classes because everyone wants to feel that they are above the class they belong to. Some ettiquite is simply common courtesy ie don't fart in an elevator, but when it comes to proper ways to eat and sip tea that I believe is unnessasary and makes people afraid to be who they are because it doesn't meet the standards set by the upper class. I am proud to be who I am and will not change forks because I just used it for my salad!

I think it masks it. But I have never met a person who uses ettiquite. They are all one way when I meet them and still that way afterwards.

This is a very interesting question. Maybe it is neither. Maybe it is something in between.
If I say please and thank you, this behavior does not mask my personality, which is introspective.
If I say please and thank you, does this show the other person that I am introspective? I don't think so. All kinds of people can say please and thank you.
I think etiquette or rules of common courtesy are just ways to make life with each other better, kinder, more appreciative. It is available to everyone - it is there for the taking and giving and I think all of us can gain by it.
Thank you for this question. I enjoyed thinking about it and answering it.

Etiquette is a form of respect you show to others. It can be a test of your own respect for yourself in not necessarily having to mask your true feelings, but finding a path to express them without prejudice or malice.
