It probably depends on where you live. In San Jose CA permits are required.

It depends on where you live. In my town we are required to and also are limited to the number of them we can have a year (although it's not very well enforced!). Call your City Hall to find out. You town should have an ordinance concerning garage sales and the signs you post for it.

In many cities yes they are, they have restrictions on where or what type of signs you can put up.

They have officers drive around and check for permits, you are fined if there is not a permit

Some cities do and some don't. Ask your neighbors or you can even stop at the courthouse or ask someone who is having a yard sale and see what they did!

Not here in Michigan. We have them all the time. I've never heard of anybody getting a permit for that.
