I have a black standard poodle, and the thing is, whenever I play the piano, he begins whining, barking and making howling noises (akin to a wolf). I can't figure out why he does this. I'm not even sure if its because the sound bother him, because sometimes he'll go under the piano and continue his wailing underneath. Has this happened to any of your dogs?

Dogs hearing is extremely sensitive and the pitch must hurt his ears. Some dogs are just more sensitive than others.

Suggest you put the dog outside or in another room when playing the piano.

Very simple, cant you see that he is begging you to quit banging on that instrument... Dogs also have very keen hearing and it's probably hurting his ears/ Do tears come out of his eyes when he is howling for you to stop. Give the dog a break...

He's singing along, of course!! My old dog Brutus used to howl when ever my parents played any Beatles songs. LOL!

Sometimes they can wail because of the sound frequencies does hurt their ears, however they can be 'singing' along or trying to communicate with you as well.
Or it can be a critic.

Well my dad and my stepmoms dogs do the same thing when people whistle or make loud noises around them. The noise bothers their ears and so they howl or make other noises to try and show you it is bothering them.

Maybe it hurts his ears, or he is just singing along. Every time I play my guitar and my dogs are in the house, I make sure it isn't loud, and the sing along like that.

LOL maybe he is singing :)
dogs have sensitive ears.
its like why they "cry" when an ambulance or firetruck pass by ?
my dogs used to do that with the guitar or piano too....
Thought they didn't like how i play but they look happy so maybe they were singing too :)

I had a dog once that if you told him to sing, he would howl. If you sang (really badly, i might add) he would howl even louder. l don't know why, but I felt like sharing. :) Maybe he wants to duet with you? LOL...
