Maybe the cat is pretending that what you are throwing is an animal that it is catching and bringing back to you to eat. You know, like when a cat catches a mouse or something like that and brings it back to the owner so that they can eat it together like it would for other members of it's cat family.

Obviously, he has learned that if he brings it back, PLAY will continue. Smart cat. I have 3 who do the same thing. I helped the first to realize that PLAY went on if he brought back the toy, and the others were apparently astute observers( or cheap immitators)
Good luck.

positioned him on an exceedingly long cord and bring him to the park. throw the toy some distance, yet no longer as some distance via fact the rope, then slowly reel him in like a fish, and say what you desire for a command to offer it back, try this for slightly - like 2 15 minute sessions an afternoon with a three minute pause in between to get some water/quiet down attempt this on a daily basis for some weeks then attempt if it sticked interior your place, if it did no longer attempt back some days

My cat does it too. I don't know why, I just guess he likes to play. He figured out I throw the little ball whenever he brings it, so he keeps bringing it. He enjoys chasing after it. He's just playing.
I don't think it's so unnatural for cats. A lot of them do it.

Maybe the cat has been reincarnated from a dog? Just kidding, my cat brought home all kind of treats to us. She loves you.

That is really cute! I used to have a little dog that thought she was a cat. She'd sit on the windowsill and was terrified of other dogs.

It's the chasing and catching prey thing to do with instinct-cat thing. Bringing it back is their instinct to share their catch with you.
A lot of outside cats will bring home things they have caught to their human friend.

I had one like that as well and have had friends that have cats that will chase and retrieve a ball.
