A majority of dogs have some kind of nerve "tickle spot" right between the bottom of the ribcage and the umbillical cord; it's sort of a remnant of an old defense system in canine evolution. A nerve runs in this area that when rubbed, causes the dog to reflexively 'scratch' at the stimulus point, i.e. the tickle spot.

Not every dog has this. It's a bit like being able to whistle or rolling your tongue. You either got it or you don't.

Ahhh...Because you hit a sweet spot on their body and it feels really good to them! I suspect people would shake their leg when someone scratched their back or other body parts if we had the primitive mind that dogs have. But we can control our urges to shake our leg because we are more intellectually advanced.
What do you think of that theory?! Sounds good to me!! :)

My dad and stepmoms dogs do that when your scratch them on their stomachs. Like people animals could be ticklish. You are basically tickling them. So the shake their leg.

the staff and trainer at petsmart told me that it could be a hotspot or an early sign of fleas. but hopefully a tickle spot. i have two dogs and one shakes his leg and the other doesn't.

It could be a reflexive response built in. Or the dog is really, really enjoying itself.

it's something to do with the nerves. I guess it's kind of like a person being tickled but it kind of makes it itch just enough for it to do it's leg thing

They have a sensitive nerve there and if you hit it just right, it makes them shake a leg.
