I just want him as a friend

If you like this person, by all means call them on their birthday. Nothing brightens someones day for another person in the past or present to wish them a happy birthday. It doesnt matter if his friends are your enemies. Fact is that you like this guy as a friend. Good luck and reach out and call him. Might make his day.

If you just want him as I friend, I wouldn't suggest calling him because it'd be easier for him to think that you are interested in getting back together. I suggest sending him a birthday card and maybe writing him a letter about how you feel. That way..there's no contact with his friends that you don't like.

You are not calling his friends, just call him. It is his birthday and you never know him and his friends might just not talk anymore.
