I make them in the oven for best flavor and a crispy skin.

Sometimes when I am in a time bind I microwave them. They are not bad microwaved just not quite as good as baked.

The quickest way to "bake" a potato with the best results is to cook it first in the microwave, then put it in the oven. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Stab the potato with the tines of a fork then rub it with butter. Put it in the microwave on a dish for 3 minutes on HIGH. Take it out -- watch it, it will be hot -- and rub some more butter on the outside, wrap it with aluminum foil and bake it for 15 minutes or until its baked to your liking. The size of the potato and the power of your microwave will make a difference in cooking times.

I say regular oven because it helps the potato retain it's flavour and it cooks evenly. Also, when you use a regular oven to cook your potatoes, you don't have to interrupt the cooking time in order to check and see if it's ready. Furthermore, you can also cook other things in the oven with your potato. Such as: chicken, stuffed mushrooms, a steak (if you like it baked) etc. You can also add garnish (like cheese) while it's still cooking in the oven, rather than stopping the microwave, removing the potato, adding the garnish, then putting the potato back in the microwave to continue cooking it. I hope this is enough of an explanation for you.

I make my baked potatoes both ways, depending on how much time I have. If I'm in a hurry, then ten minutes in the microwave will have to do, followed by lots of butter and other tasty toppings. When I've got an hour or more until the rest of dinner is ready, then into the oven it goes - covered in olive oil and coarse salt before wrapping in aluminum foil. The longer it stays in the oven, the more fabulous it is going to be, especially the skin!

For me the only difference in cooking method is the time available. I've never met a cooked potato I didn't like :)

Wash and dry the potato.
Using a fork, poke numerous holes in the potato so it is almost covered in holes. Try not to leave any gaps and make sure the holes are deep.
Place the potato on a plate and put it into the microwave.
Set the microwave to 2:30.
Take the potato out. Leave it out for half a minute or so. The potato may have liquid leaking out of the holes. If so, lightly dab the potato with a napkin.
Place the potato back into the microwave and set it for another 2 minutes.
Take out the potato.
You now have a baked potato ready to eat.

I cook them in the microwave. If there is a taste difference, I can't tell it. They get done a whole lot faster in the microwave than in the oven. I generally eat red-skin potatoes.

Oven takes longer, but gives a better skin. I like making twice baked potatoes, so I generally do this. If I am in a rush, I will microwave them- but they are not as good.

i cook them in the microwave for 5-7 minutes depending on size and number that i'm cooking. THEN i cook them in the oven for about 1/2 hour. cuts the oven cooking time in half and still gives you that good crunchy skin

Depends on how much time I have. Oven is better, try baking them in the oven this way, wash the potatoes well. dry, rub on a little cooking oil, put on cookie sheet and sprinkle on some rock salt. Wonderfull.

the oven tastes better. Even the toaster oven works just as well. The microwave, well, depending on the voltage, you can bake them for 4-8 minutes before they dry out.
But, I prefer the oven or the toaster oven.
