Chinese does indeed have the most NATIVE speakers, followed perhaps by Spanish. But if you mean which language is spoken in most corners of the globe by the most people, whether native speakers or not, definitely English.

Imagine this: A Japanese businessman, a Saudi businessman and a German businessman meet in Paris for a meeting. What language do they use to communicate ? English. That scenario may seem trivial but it happens everyday.

Just about all over the world there are many many people who speak English. If fact, the only places where it's hard to find someone who speaks English are like Germany and France where they don't rely so much on tourism like people in India and Thailand do. I know this because I traveled the world with my family for nine months about four months ago and though we didn't go everywhere, we got good ideas of the areas around where we went.
Of course, the most common first language (the one people grew up speaking) is probably Spanish, I'd say, since that's what they speak in Spain, Central America, and almost all of South America, except Brazil. But hey, maybe China has enough people that Chinese beats Spanish, but there are Sooo many forms of Chinese that I don't count it as one language. Sure someone could say mandarin Chinese or whatever, but that would be learned after the kind of Chinese that a person's family speaks as the person grows, therefor, it wouldn't be their first language.
