For wrf3k who answered this question by saying that factoring in the benefits the military receives, they don't have it that bad. You are sadly mistaken on that. First, the US Military deserves a lot more money then they get considering how dangerous their job is. And yes, we do get the majority of our health care free, but that is about the only really good benefit we have. And even medical, though it's not nearly what a civilian would pay for insurance, they still take money out of our pay for it. Our dental insurance isn't very good at all. Though we military families are seen in military facilities for medical, we don't have that benefit for dental, which means we have to see a civilian dentist, unless we're living overseas, and the insurance doesn't pay a lot. (As a matter of fact, the dental insurance I had with my ex-husband was better then the insurance I have through the military.) And even being overseas, the active duty members needs are taken care of before their families are. We are stationed in Italy, and there are times we have to wait months for an appointment. People also seem to believe that shopping at the Commissary or Exchange on base gives us some big discount, and again, not true. When we were stationed in the States, we shopped at the grocery store off base because all in all it was cheaper then the Commissary. And I'm sorry, but there are military families out there who are on food-stamps, and that is so sad. We can live on base in military housing for free, but there is a waiting list, and I have seen people wait up to two years to finally get in, only to get new orders to go to their next duty station! And when you do get in housing, they take your housing allowance away from you, which wasn't even enough to pay for your rent, lights and everything else you need while living off base. I will say that we do make more living overseas then we do when were stationed in the States, but it's still not a lot! Our military deserves better pay!!!

Everybody complains that they aren't payed what they are worth.
What does my Husband receive as a Naval Officer in the way of pay and bennies?
Lessee:
30 Days paid vacation every year.. from his first year. What other major corporation does that? Most require you to work for several years before getting a second week, let alone FOUR.
Medical Insurance: his and mine are free. My dental costs $10 a month and covers up to 80%. I get two free cleanings with accompanying xrays free each year. I don't care what anyone says, I have received excellent care and free prescription drugs(or at most $9) is a godsend.
BAH. Our rent/mortgage is PAID FOR by the Navy. No other major corporation provides TAX FREE money for this purpose.
BAS. Nobody else gives a TAX FREE allowance for food when the Servicemember isn't deployed or in training.
The GI Bill:. what other corporation asks you to pay a measly $1200 and in return provides you with tens of thousands of dollars to get an education with?! That doesn't include the tuition assistance program for AD servicemen and the plethora of education and training available through the military as part of the job.
Then there are the different special pays and allowances like Family Separation allowance. does IBM pay it's technicans an extra $250/ month just because they are away from home? Nope.
Base pay is adequate as long as one lives within their means. Junior enlisted pay is NOT DESIGNED to feed and shelter a family of 4. never was. Anyone who cannot survive on military pay isn't budgeting very well. I have seen E3s with four kids do VERY well, and I have seen E6s with just a spouse up to their eyballs in debt because they just had to have that fancy sportscar and the Mc mansion.

You don't know what you are talking about. Someday if you get a invitation to a Post exchange. The products are top of the line price included. (why they make a fair wage)Yes they sell. The services give the members schooling by the time they have 4 years sometimes less they have the equal of a AA degree. They want more education the service will help. They get discounts in most cities, airlines it goes on and on. Good pension health care when they retire then we have some congressmen trying to cut back on the benefits. Its really improved and rightly so

They are payed just enough money to survive off of and that is it. And to prove that what you are saying is right, we live in privatized base housing and if it weren't for the VFW we would have been evicted from housing with a 1 and 2 year old yesterday. the government takes care of the family's vary well if your spouse is deployed but if they are not deployed then they could care less about you and your on your own.

We pay our sports athletes by spending money on going to their games, and buying their products. The government pays the soldiers. People are like pay the soldiers more! Then get pissed off if their taxes get raised. If you want to support the troops, send them stuff, patronize any buisnesses they have, stuff like that. Write your congressmen and tell them to raise their pay to that of sports players. They volunteer to get treated badly. People say the army isn't supposed to be fun, or a picnic, and **** like that. I think those people are idiots myself. Just because someone is in the army shouldn't mean they get treated badly.

I agree 100%. I thought him going into the navy we wouldn't have to live paycheck from paycheck. But we do. We are currently on wic and medical card. To help us make it. He has been in for over 3 years. Though I don't regret his decision to go in. The pay still sucks.

They arent treated badly. They pay, while not great, is good when you factor in benefits and such. Don't listen to everything the Liberal media says.

because people in the army give up their right to an opinion. if you complain about it, no-one has to listen to you. the only way this will change is if the American people protested about it. i totally agree with you, i used to be in the army and my husband is in right now. in November he's going to Iraq and leaving his two newborns with me. he'll miss their first Christmas. its messed up.

Money. There's no money to extend benefits or pay further than what we already have (I'm a Navy wife so I know what you mean).
