I think you should check a shelter or rescue group. They will usually have an idea of how much exercise a specific dog needs. Also, if it's a good rescue, they may know more about the dogs. Some groups foster dogs and get to know the personalities and try to match the dogs to the needs of the person adopting. Do remember that a dog is a family member and this is a responsibility, not just something to dump if it doesn't work out.

Here's a second vote for retired racing greyhounds. Greyhounds are sprinters - they have 10 minute bursts of energy then sleep for 4 hours. Overall greyts sleep 18-20 hours per day. As a breed they tend to be quiet (barkers are considered quite exceptional) and they are a single coated breed with very minimal, seasonal shedding. Adopting a retired racer means getting a dog who is crate trained (which translates into housebreaking very easily), leash trained, and a dog who has been socialized with humans everyday of its life. They will always look to you to be the alpha of the pack and are very friendly with strangers and children. For more information on the breed, or for local adoption groups in your area go to http://www.greyhoundpets.org

I wouldn't recommend a dog for an apartment in a city. The dog wouldn't be able to get enough exercise because there are no lawns in apartments. Plus, you're not normally allowed to have pets, or that's at least what I've thought. Anyway, if I were to get a dog in an apartment, I'd get a small dog, such as a Yorkie. Good Luck! :)

If you like collie looks in a small package, a shetland sheepdog, also known as a sheltie, is a great dog in an apartment. They are able to get adequate exercise just playing fetch inside, are great watchdogs, and are very loyal and affectionate to their owners. They are highly intelligent, can do agility, herding, etc and are extremely easy to train and teach tricks. They are also gorgeous dogs! I have a sheltie and a collie, and got the sheltie when I lived in a small home and got the collie when I moved to a bigger house with a larger yard. They are both fantastic pets!! As my name notes, I do collie and sometimes sheltie rescue and foster dogs in my home until the find permanent ones!

Go to akc.org and they have a place on their site that tells you about is breed. So do not get a hyper dog or you will be walking it all the time. And watch The Dog Whisperer, Ceaser Milan on the National Geographic channel.

It depends on the size of the apartment. If it is big, any breed will do and if not any small breed will do. Like a Rat Terriers.

don't get just ANY small dog!! alot of your small dogs are very hyper. NO to the following: yorkies and poms. you might get luck and get one of those that are not hyper. poodles and terries have lot of problems with being left alone.
Corgi are good dogs but they need lots of exc. and they shedded BAD
The best dog to get for any apartment if a Japanese Chin
they don't bark alot, if any. they don't need much exc. They are not agresive
Best pick is a Chin

Any breed is okay, as long as you take care of it. I have a rottie and I used to live in an apartment, all I'd do is take him for long walks.
