I recommend reading "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"...a classic book about a girl being in New York in the 1920's in between wars. It's really very excellent.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold is a new approach to a murder story. It's a kind of inside-out mystery with lots of twists and a dash of poetic justice. I also LOVE Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, but if you're a guy, it might not be your style.
