I believe the reason is because it requires actively paying attention and focus on the other person when we are using alternative forms of communication (e.g. sign language, body language, facial expression). We live in an "instant gratification" society so there is too much personal investment to sit down and actually give someone our undivided attention. This happens between non-deaf people as well.

I'm a deaf myself. Do you mean why do people are afraid of deaf people or do you mean why do people scare deaf people?
People are not supposed to be afraid of deaf people. What is there to be afraid of? We are not "mutants." We do not have powers. We just lack the ability to hear. Deaf people can do anything except to hear.
I can talk because of my cochlear implant, which enables me to hear. I'm still deaf because implanted patients are deaf when they take off the cochlear.
People should not be afraid of deaf people. People should be building bridges with deaf people. Overcoming the language barrier once for all.

They may be afraid they'll communicate with you improperly. Do you think that's a possibility? I was very afraid of sign language when it was first introduced to me because it was something I wasn't accustomed to. I didn't retain much of it, but I want to learn again. People just need more exposure.
When I did an internship with some people who only spoke sign language, I thought 'these guys are gonna mess with me so bad.' LOL. It was just nervousness. I loved them and we all got along great. To this day, "friend" is one of the few words I can remember in sign language and it's only because of the people who taught it to me.
The more open you are with yourself, the less people will shy away. I don't want to say it's all up to you to break the ice, but it does help.

I'm not afraid of deaf people, nor do I know anyone who is afraid. This is news to me! I'd have to say that people who are afraid of deaf people are probably pretty ignorant. Maybe they are afraid they will catch "teh deaf"?

I don't know that people are really afraid of the deaf. I think they are just uncomfortable because they don't know how to act around someone who can't hear.

because some people are just simpletons... i'm not afraid, i work at the wvsdb, as a "houseparent" (child care worker), and i love it!!! i teach my 4 small children sign language, so they can communicate with the students when they get to visit the campus, or if we should see someone out and about. asl is a very beautiful, efficient way of communication, and i'm glad that i know it, and i'm proud that my kids can grasp it so easily

Because they don't realize is nothing is wrong with the hearing impaired. My cousin is (I don't mean to be rude it IS the proper term,) mentally retarted. He is about the sweetest most kind hearted guy you would imagine. You wouldn't believe how people act around him. They act like he has the plague or something.
These are people who haven't had something like that close to them and don't understand it.
Or they just think they're perfect.
Or maybe they're just a**holes.

People are afraid of what they don't understand. Maybe the thought of themselves ever becoming deaf is too terrifying for them to understand....and makes them behave ignorantly.
