I put the anti-flea treatment on him 2 weeks ago when he had a little scratch near his neck... Now he's got a bigger patch of hair missing with a scab in about the same area. It doesn't look like it's from a fight (although he is an outdoor cat). Am I over reacting or does anyone else know of Advantage causing similar reactions in their cats?

if you are buying advantage from a licensed vet then an allergic reaction is highly unlikely. PET MEDS products are typically expired when you recieve them and they are not made in the united states. which means that they DO NOT have the required ingredients to protect your pet. similar products from retail stores are NOT the same as ADVANTAGE because their main ingredient is a pesticide. my sister works at a vets office and has SIX CATS and has NEVER had a problem with advantage.

the best way to know if your cat is having a reaction is to take him to a licensed VET. it is rare but a reaction can happen.

he might have food allergies or an absess related to a fight you were not witness to. only a professional can tell you for sure.

Advantage and my vet both recommend that you do not apply advantage near the area of an open sore, cut or scratch.
Reason being it can cause severe irritation if it gets into the wound, it was never brought up wether it may cause a infection.
Keep the affected area clean, you can try putting a little hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and gently dab the area. monitor the area and if it seems to be getting worse contact your vets office for advice.
It doesn;t matter what topical treatment you use advantage, frontline or revolution all can be skin irritants and may cause complications if administered around an open cut.

My cat chloe is seven months old and twice now I've given her Advantage, the first time she was sick (real still and quiet) for three days, this last time she through up for two days. I don't know what to do now. I have two cats the other one has never had a problem with Advantage, but after reading some of the blogs perhaps I'll try just putting a drop on her instead of the full amount. They are both house cats, but somehow a flee will find them.

I used to use Advantage (purchased from my vet), and both of my cats lost their hair at the application site every time. I switched to Revolution and haven't had a problem since. If you have an outdoor cat you may wish to consider this as Revolution is also a heartworm preventative.

ADVANTAGE IS MADE TO BE ASORBED THRU THE SKIN. IF THERE WAS A BRAKE IN THE SKIN IT MIGHT CAUSE A IRRITATION. CLEAN THE AREA WITH A MILD SOAP AND WATER DAILY.IF IT GETS NO BETTER IN A WEEK I WOULD CALL MY VET.
