What is the significance of giving a silver drinking cup at a Baby's Christening?

for most people there is no significance other than giving the child the gift of (wish for) wealth.

there is also a reference to the Chalice the meaning here is that the child will be encouraged to participate in religious rituals such as prayers

as a baby gift its a crossover tradition from the Jewish Kiddush cup
(re. crossover tradition i mean things like marriage
where the ceremony and traditions are now different for christian and Jewish peoples but the ideas behind it stays about the same)
