In my culture we don't have tooth fairies.

But I think if it's the first tooth you can go ahead and put $5 rather than just $1.

She will learn that losing a tooth is something to be celebrated.

About the raised expectancy; the next time she has just $1 she may learn that she shouldn't expect something extra all the time a natural thing happens.

I might be very wrong about this too. I mean how can you resist to do such thing to your own kid. :)

Putting an extra dollar everytime she loses a tooth might motivate her and she could be looking forward to lose her next tooth.

This sounds like a better idea. She has to be sure she is loved and money is not comparable to love.

There will be lots of opportunities for her to learn that one doesn't get something extra everytime something natural happens. (Not even I could accept that either maybe :) )

Cheers :)

I think $3 is plenty. That's enough to get some candy or a cheap toy. Remember - she'll be losing a lot of teeth over the next few years and you don't want to be doling out $5 every time. If you take her to the Dollar Store with $3, I'm sure she'll find alot of neat stuff she can afford with that.

My grandaughter is five. My daughter put fine glitter from the window sill to the pillow. She gave her a dollar. My grandaughter did not even care about the money. She just was thrilled by the fairy dust.

Does she have a lot more teeth to lose? If so, I would start low and work your way up. I think $1 or $2 is appropriate for her first tooth. Lucky kid - I only used to receive .25 cents!

I gave my son $5 for the first tooth and then with every other one, I (the tooth fairy) will give $1. I heard that is a good rate from a dentist once!! Losing that first tooth is so important to them!!
