I mean, if the cat got out and got pregnant last night, would she still be in heat today? Or, if she's still in heat today, does that mean that she definitely didn't get pregnant last night?

Your cat will be in heat for about a week. Kittens in the same litter can be from different fathers and be conceived on different days during this time.

Keep her indoors and when the kittens are born and of the proper age, get them all spayed and neutered.

I had a cat who went into heat. Our male cat did services for her for 2 days. Unfortunately he then died from an accident. She continued to be in heat. She was in heat for a total of a week. We kept her inside for the rest of her time in heat. She had 4 beautiful kittens.

If the heat time stops and restarts again in about 2 weeks or longer then she did not get pregnant. My daughter has a 5 year old female that has never gotten pregnant. She has been with several males cats while in heat. Apparently she cannot get pregnant. She is the 2ND cat I have known that was this way.

And cats can get pregnant again, by more than one cat. That's why you should have your cats FIXED and kept INDOORS. A female cat, while in heat, can breed with many male cats, each donating sperm. That's why cats have so many different colored kittens.

My neighbors have about 20 cats outside. Please take responsibility for your pet and have her fixed and kept indoors.

I'm not a vet, but I would bet that the hormones that make a cat howl, prowl and otherwise behave unbearably do not instantly shut themselves off the minute she gets laid. They likely decline over a period of a few days.

just a guess...

kittens of the same litter can be fathered by different males. when she starts gaining weight in little pouch-sized areas (and when they start kicking) that's a good indicator that you're expecting kittens.

By the way, there's a little trick to not getting kittens: Take her to the vet and get her spayed!

It will eventually stop - they won't be in heat for their whole pregnancy, if that's what you mean.

it will stop only during pregnancy. Once the kittens are weaned it will start all over again
