I have a miniature dachshund and I always hear that they were "just bred that way," but i never understood what originally went into making a large dog smaller.

Breeders found the smallest varieties of the breed they could, and kept breeding them, thus making it a whole breed carrying DNA for being especially tiny.

Well you see there once was a midget who grew up on a small farm. He was always very small and he often got mad. He went into the forest one day and found a fairy. The fairy gave him some seeds and told him to plant them in the farm. He went home and planted them and then went to sleep. When he awoke there was a very small plant and on it was a very small can of Pedigree Dog Food. He took the dog food and fed it to Lucky his dog. The dog became really small and the midget was happy. The small dog bred with other dogs until there became a lot of them and that is how they came on this planet earth.

through a long process of personalised natural selection. they took dogs that were smaller and bred them until they isolated the gene for smallness. it's the same with other traits like friendliness or anger or protectiveness.

I think they were decendants from things like foxes or wolves but kept in REALLY small cages to stunt the growth then they bred the more docile ones. I'm not really sure though
