It will take multiple things done simultaneously to reduce pollution. Obviously we need to reduce emissions from vehicles and industry into the atmosphere, and emissions of pollutants into our waterways. You mention banning certain items from stores; the first thing that comes to mind is placing a ban or at least a fee on the use of plastic bags in grocery and other stores. The fee structure is in use in Ireland, and it has reduced plastic bag use by 90-95 percent. People who insist on using plastic bags must pay 15 cents per bag. We can let store CEOs and presidents know that you want them to reduce or eliminate plastic bag use. Offer alternatives: suggest they start by offering a 5 percent discount to consumers who bring in canvas or net bags and use them for their groceries, or they give some other incentive to shoppers who use canvas.
You mention volunteer service: I'm not sure what you mean, but we all can certainly volunteer to reduce pollution by following the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle. There are also many simple and quick things we can all do to reduce pollution and help improve the planet (see sources). You can volunteer to help an "Adopt a Highway" or "Adopt a Park" clean-up team; offer to help someone who doesn't recycle understand the local recycling guidelines so they will recycle. Some people would recycle if someone would just get them started or they think it's too hard to do until someone shows them how easy it can be.

We need the govenment to stop allowing factories to produce so much pollution. Time after time, they are told to put "scrubbers" on their smoke stacks, and time after time they say "But if we do that, it will hurt our capital and production will slow. We can't afford to do that." And the EPA allows them to continue polluting. At least that's what happened it Houston at the refineries. And because of that, every day a fine layer of black soot falls from the air and gathers on people's cars and homes and will end up in their lungs.

lets look at the rest of the world on this one .in the us we have so many regulations on everything that a cow will soon have to be monitor for methane .why does this damn pollution thing always come to us and not overseas china, russia, europe nations..
russia has many probelms with nuclear waste (older subs) china air pollutin because of it growing industires. it at least to me it seems that the good old us is always to blame . i am so sick of taking the blame on this .this is the greatest nation in the world and we should all be proud of it...we for the most part always find a answer for a probelm and not let another country solve it for us. and for the most part when some other nation has a probelm they always seem to come to us for a answer or help.. yes we should recycle and conserve but this has to be involed by all of us on this planet.. that s where it has to start..........

We need to start using a better fuel for our vehicles. That means trains, planes and automobiles.....
We have the means to do that but the big oil companies don't want to be shut down so they fight it. Of course they use the big money they charge us to put on the biggest fight so they always win.
People can do small scale things, like recycling, not littering, disposing of things like tires in the proper place, and planting trees and shrubbery.
Corporations need to do the rest.

I strongly feel that passing laws to make home builders start building better homes and ones that have to use solar energy is a great way to start. with all the new construction going on it would save a lot of electricity and we as a whole would not depend so much on fuel as we do now.

finding new, renewable sources of energy. this is just a theory i made for my science project. volcano's give of a lot of heat, maybe in the future we might be able to find a way to tap into the enormous heat source in a volcano and use it as a form of geothermal energy. it will be a clean and efficient sorce of energy that won't pollute the environment.

I was thinking of designing a machine that can actually "scrub" electrons from carbon dioxide, rendering it practically useless, and providing a source of electricity. this could help reduce global warming, and could be shut off to help trees get the carbon dioxide they need.

Stop buying anything packaged.
What an unbelievable waste, the mulitple wrappers that we Americans insist everything comes in, just so it all "appears" more desireable.
What a bunch of freaks we are

We can reduce pollution by planting many trees near the streets. It is because plants absorb the air that come out of the cars, buses, etc. and they replace it by the OXYGEN that come out of the leaves. It is because they absorb the air that come out of the cars, buses, etc to make their food while they exhale OXYGEN because they don't need OXYGEN.
