Because deep down they know he is real but just want to live for themselves. The Bible even says that demons know the truth.

God is by definition undefinable. Unprovable. Unknowable. Our world looks for answers in the known, the defined. Proof.
I actually believe most people think God is real. So maybe you are asking why atheists believe God isn't real?
I can answer this from personal experience. I was raised an Atheist. My parents took our family out of the LDS church when I was just 6. I was told there is no God. And so I grew up with no Divinity or God.
Well I can't answer for others why they think God is or isn't real. What matters only is Why do you think God is or is not real? I can say God Is Real I Know This To Be Truth, but what matters is what you are saying for you.

People who say God caused this, or God created that, aren't speaking about evidence they see. They are using a lazy sort of logic, much like early man used when trying to understand weather, or disease. For years, thunder and rain was caused by the gods. Disease was caused by a curse from the gods. We know better today, because we have learned about our world.
The concept of "god" itself has changed in society over the years. There was a time when God was like Santa Claus, and you would pray to God to give you what you needed. Today, most people realize this is a childish way of thinking about things, so God is now more of a cosmic radiation, that saturates everything. Maybe in 100 years, God will be thought of like a black hole, or like a gamma ray, I don't know. Bottom line, there is more to this universe than a 2000 year old book imagined. Frightened old men in the desert are not who I would consider authorities on the origin of this world.

Because in my comprehension of how to make sense of the world, life, and so forth, I don't understand how there can be a higher figure. I was raised religious, then moved to Agnostic (someone who doesn't think it's possible to know if there is/isn't a God) and now, pretty much an Atheist.
Sometimes, things are just a matter of human responsibility, choice, and action - not a man in the sky.

God(s) may be real, but there is no reason to believe it. But more, If God)s) are real, do you think that they would be comprehensible to the human mind?
For me, an agnostic, it is just far more sensible to realize that I do not know . There may be God(s), I might even prefer to believe that, but belief is not proof, not evidence, and is not going to result in a tangible fact.
But even so, how do you choose your God since there so many and all claim to be the true way.
On the basis of the blood spilled throughout history in the name of religion/Gods, assuming that God(s) are benevolent, it seems that God(s) have absolutely nothing to do with the false religions created by man.
Unless, of course, God(s) like the sight of human blood, misery, war, disease, injustice, and ignorance

I agree with the first post above. There is no actual proof that God exsisted. I myself am going through a phase right now that I wonder if God is actually real. I don't know if he is. I have never had proof that he exsists, so I don't know what to believe. I believe that something is up there, but I don't know what. There is too much controversy about people saying God is a woman, God is a man, that you just don't know what to believe anymore.

I think a lot of people are angry. They think that just because they've been hurt before "there is no God". I think a lot of them really do believe there is a God, but they are working their their frustrations and anger.
I think a lot of people just have a hard time with faith in general, beyond just spiritual faith. People can have faith in a lot of things, involving all areas of their life. "They will believe it when they see it", and even then they are not always convinced. Kind of like they are always on guard, wanting to take a 0% chance of being let down.
Whatever the reasons may be, there will always be people who believe, some who don't believe, and others who aren't sure what to think. That you can count on.

I believe that God was created by people because they couldn't explain certain things. Religions, on the other hand, were created by political leaders to bend the people to their wills.
The caesars claimed to speak with the gods. Greek kings claimed to speak with the gods. Japanese emperors claimed to speak with the gods. Moses claimed to speak with the gods.
What do these men have in common? They were all political leaders who needed to persuade their people to follow them. Why do so many people believe Moses spoke to god, but do not believe the others?
I am an agnostic -- so will freely state that there may be a god. However, I do not believe in the Christian god -- nor the god of any organized religion.

Because they don't want to admit they can't do it on their own. That they NEED a God and Savior. And if they admitted there was a God they would feel obligated to change their ways and admit they made a mistake. That is something people don't like doing.

There is absolutely zero evidence of any deity.. Logically, If there is no evidence of anything existing, one must assumes that it never existed.. Believing in a god is exactly that, a belief.. And isn't it silly that one has to die before they meet the so called god??

Because it gives them an extra day off a week and a 10% increase in salary.
They'll say there is no evidence.
What would they consider evidence.
"Extraordinary claims need extraordianty evidence."
Like what?
"I don't know".
You have to know. You are the one asking for evidence so you should know what your standards for evidence are.
"A 50 foot image of Jesus that appears every year in Times Square on New Year's Eve".
Since we know that doesn't happen, that's a pretty safe piece of evidence to ask for.
