Call a professional. You wouldn't want you or anyone else getting stung in the process.

Mr. Goodbar has no clue - most bees are NOT yellow and black. You most likely have Carpenter bees in your banister. They are not aggressive, but are quite destructive. You may be best off calling an exterminator, but it is possible to take care of them yourself. They leave small holes in the wood, about half the size of a dime. They actually drill holes in the wood, and make their nests in there. Get a can of bee / wasp spray, and spray it up into the holes at dusk or dark, when the bees are inside. The spray kills the bees instantly, and also kills any larva in the nest.

After typing this, I found this website for you. Good luck!

It depends on what kind of bees you have. Number one........all bees are not yellow and black..
Now then, if you have honey bees you can probably contact the extention office in your area and they can tell you someone who would come take the bees. If it is bumble bees then you can try putting moth balls near their hole. Best to do this very early morning or late night while it is cool and they are not active. We got rid of them doing this when they moved into our well house. If they are big yellow and black it sounds like bumble bees.

Wow I don't envy you, I wish I can give you a better answer . All I can advise you is if you want to clear it on your own do it at night bees a far more active during the day. Find the entrance, there is usually only one and spray it with killer spray until its dripping. You may have to repeat.

Good luck

My instinct would be to get one of those smoking things you buy to get rid of mosquitoes. You know the ones, green spiral things you light up at the one end.
It doesn't make tons of smoke but it is constant and quite stinky so the bees will get the message little by little and hopefully will leave without stinging anyone.
use at your own peril.
Perhaps even incense sticks will do it over time.
I am not responsible if you get stung.
