Seems to me that all cars from mid 90's and up are purposely built to breakdown frequently and be gas guzzlers, anyone agree?

I don't have a car from the 80's still, however, my mother's 97 Ford Taurus is the ultimate crap-wagon. It has broken down SOOO much... I can't count how much it's cost to repair it--and it's now only worth about $1000. However, it doesn't need to be filled up as often as most cars.

However, my G35 seems to have hella gas mileage and hasn't caused me any trouble at all.

80s vintage Toyotas were some of the most reliable vehicles ever built. The were so good that Toyota had to scale back on their quality control a bit out of fear that people would stop replacing them.

Most 80s vintage American iron was pretty sad compared to today's vehicles.

80s vintage Mercedes were virtually bullet-proof. Far better than today's models. You'll still see lots of them on the roads today. The diesels can easily cover 1,000,000 miles without major repairs if properly cared for though they are dead slow.

There were a few 80s vintage Japanese lines that were extremely frugal with fuel, but they were also as slow as molasses compared to cars today that get similar mileage.

When it comes to safety and comfort, however, today's cars are far better than virtually all 80s vintage iron regardless of where it was made.

I have a 1979 Mustang 5.0 that gets about the same mileage that the new ones get. (19-22 highway) Also had a 1984 Nissan that got a solid 41mpg on the highway. (better than most non-hybrid new cars)
I believe the older cars were built more durable/ solid, however the newer cars are miles ahead of the older ones in occupant safety and comfort.

I've got a Toyota from the '80s it runs good. It started in the '70s that the big three started building cars that would last no more than 10 years. They want you to drive until the car is almost paid for then trade it on a new one.

Newer fuel injected vehicles are more fuel efficient and for the most part are better in many ways. Some older cars were built with heavier duty drive trains and suspension parts and do last longer when put to rough driving and less maintenance then newer cars. The bottom line is if you take care of your vehicle and do the maintenance required newer cars are better on gas.
