When cats were wild, they developed the instinct to seclude themselves when they were ill so they would be safe from possible predators like large birds and canines. In solitude, they could heal. Of course, not all injured or ill animals survived.
Although our pets are many generations away from those early felines, instinctively, often they still seek hidden spots when they don't feel well. I've had cats who have died on my bed with me petting them, cats who disappeared out the door (even though they were very weak) never to be seen again, and cats who have hidden in closets -- I assume as a substitute for outdoor solitude and safety.
I'm sorry about your kitty.

I'm sorry for the loss of your cat. I havent ever heard that about cats before. My aunts cat died last year, we think he was hit by a car or something but didnt have any physical injuries on him. He was found right around the corner from her driveway. Now he was an outdoor cat and was found close to his home. So if he were sick or what he died right there where he lived. So I dont know about the whole die away from home thing. You said she was inside when u found her laying there like that and when u returned she wasnt there. I suggest to actually look around ur house properly unless uve done that already. And if u have and havent found her anywhere, ask urself did u leave the door open when u went out to get the cactus!? She may have gotten out that way. Its hard to say really..

Most cats do go away from home to die in my experience. But also from experience , my cat went outdoors and i never saw her for 2 weeks. I think she was stuck somewhere and couldn't get home. There are people out there who will take in a cat, also there are people who will kill a cat for fun. I hope your cat returns home safe and sound.

If it's an indoor cat it will die close to it's owner,if it's allowed outside most of the time they will take off to die...but then again it's that time of the year your cat might have just wondered off and got lost or someone took it in.

If the cat has access to the outdoors, she won't die at home. A cat's natural instinct is to find someplace dark, cool, and secluded, and to die alone. Even an indoor cat will go into a room that is rarely used and find a place to hide when it is time for him/her to die. It's just their nature.

I had one die in my arms. I had one die at the vet. I had one die trying to get home (we think she got hit by a car. She was found with a twisted body in the snow at my next door neighbor's house with her nose pointing towards our house). Had one that we saw the neighbor kid swerve to hit her (she had 5 week old kittens in the house and she ran outside)
But we've had several that we don't really know what happened to them. They run off one day and never come home.

That's not true. Some might slink away -- animals tend to go off by themselves when they don't feel good. I didn't quite understand your description, but either she was acting normal, or acting sick -- I couldn't tell which from your post.
I do hope that she's all okay and comes home soon.

I am in agreement that if allowed outside they will go off to die, but an indoor cat will obviously die indoors. It is debatable as to whether they go off in the home or remain close to their owners.

No cats die where they die. This is realy sad but you might want to check under the bed or couch to make sure she didn't depart inside the house.

The safest, healthiest cats are totally indoor cats. They do die at home and in animal hospitals.
