With the statistics dismal on the fate of abandoned cats, I'd like to see people promote their favorite no-kill shelters who rescue and love cats from all walks of life. All of my cats were rescued, and two have been with me since before their eyes opened because I was their foster mom from the Treehouse Animal Shelter in Chicago.

So what are your favorite shelters and how do we get people more involved in this wonderful volunteer opportunity?

The Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood, Fl is an awesome place. I have seen them so over-run with cats that they were literally giving up the only 2 offices in the building so that new mothers could have enough space for their litters.

After Hurricane Charley they got hundreds of animals, mostly dogs that were storm orphans. People had either let them loose to fend for themselves, or had their homes destroyed and could not care for them any longer. They called them "Charley's Angels". I fostered one of those dogs for someone who promised to come get his dog when he got back on his feet. 4 months later the man had made enough repairs to his house to come for his dog.

There are many ways to help at the shelter. Even unused blankets, pillows, and towels can be donated. If you get a new washer, dryer, or fridge check with your local shelter to see if they can use your old one (if it still works). We donated our fridge and they replaced the one in their vet clinic that was so old it did not even have square corners. They are always looking for people to help walk dogs, give baths, etc.

California Feline Foundation in Fresno, CA- wonderful set up with majority of cats loose in rooms instead of in cages. Offers low cost spay and neuter program.

Also like the Tulsa SPCA in Tulsa, OK but they are not totally no-kill but try to be as much as possible. The auxillary sponsors a great pet therapy program for local nursing homes.

The city shelter in Tulsa also has a group working with them to promote adoptions of suitable pets. They do a spay/neuter program and foster out as many animals as possible. Once in the adoption program, the animal is safe from euthanasia.

Oh and my favorite is probably my house. :-) Anybody needing a home can hang out until a suitable permanent placement is found.

Hats off to Petsmart and other places that offer use of their facilities for adoption drives, and for their public education and support.

There is this place in my city called the Central NY Cat Coalition. It is a great place. They are no-kill and they also spay or neuter your cat for $40 or less depending.
