After the fall of France, Hitler thought the British would be an easy mark. What makes the Battle of Britain unique, is that it was fought solely in the air and at sea. Hitler thought he could bomb the British into submission and that his submarine "Wolf Packs" could effectively cut off supplies from the "Arsenal of Democracy" which was the United States. He was horribly wrong. He underestimated the British resolve as well as new technologies such as radar which gave the British plenty of time to intercept the German bombers over the British channel. He also underestimated Britain's "home field advantage" with fighting in the air on their turf; The British pilots were still fresh when they went into combat while their German counterparts were flying for hours before encountering combat.

John_D and Karl S (above) are both right with the air force building back up during the switch by the Germans to bombing the towns instead of the aerodromes.

The battle was hard fought and no clear winner was established, basically a 50/50 spilt, however, when you think about it, 1 for 1 on each side means that there wasn't enuff to supply air support of an amphibious landing by the Germans, thus the plans to invade the UK were postponed for at least another year and then indefinitely becuase of the great progress of the allied forces.

Thus, in hindsight the Battle of Britain was won by the British.

The major event that led up to the battle of Britain is that Germany kicked everyones butt. Then rolled up to the English channel while the English were safe on there island from being rolled. The Germans didn't really want to beat Britain so didn't plan well for it. They wanted peace with England. That's why they let them leave at Dunkirk. The Germans weighed a airborne opp but deiced not to after Greece. So they needed to destroy the RAF to allow unfettered sea landings of the island. The outcome was that Germany lost. But they should have won they were winning the battles bombing fighter command. When the Germans changed there focus from bombing the Brits ability to field aircraft to bombing cities. The tied turned and the Brits were able to rebuild there dying air force and mount a counter offensive costing Germany the battle. I hope that helps.

The Battle of Brittian, the air war that, for the Germans was supposed to knock out the Brittish Air Force so that a cross channel invasion was possible. The Germans started by targeting Air Fields and Radar stations and came dangerously close to a knock out punch that would have beat the RAF. However after a daring bombing raid to Berlin, Hitler was so inraged he ordered a change to German bombing targets to London and other civilian targets. While the citizens of Britian endured, the RAF slowly built back up and was able to meet the German Air Force with force. So that when the major push by the Luffwaffa came the RAF met and fought them to a standstill. Thus preventing the invasion of Brittian by the Germans.

The fall of France and the british withdrawal at Dunkirk immediately preceded the battle of britain. The RAF was saved at the last moment when hitler diverted the bombing of the airfields and radar stations to the bombing of english cities.
