They wore the usual gear. The helmet was more for warmth than anything, it was made of fur-lined leather. WWII vintage aircraft had no climate control system, i.e. heat, and it was damn cold in those things at altitude. The harness and parachute were needed to fit properly in the cockpit; they would have been too far back from the controls without the 'chute.

It's likely that many of the parachutes were not serviceable, or even packed with a real parachute. It wouldn't do to have your "suicide squad" getting cold feet at the last minute and jumping out of the airplane! Why would they want to do that?

Because:

The little spoken fact was that the canopy was booby-trapped, usually with several hand grenades. Any attempt to get out would result in instant death. The also guaranteed at least a bit of extra damage. And why was that so?

Because:

Many kamikaze pilots were not volunteers and the grenades were needed to ensure that they completed their mission appropriately.

Don't know...but there was a jewish kamikaze pilot who crashed his plane in his brother's scrapyard...By the way "Kamikaze" means "Divine Wind"..which is probably what they got just before they impacted.

Probably for the same reason a suicidal person uses a clean glass and purified water to pass the bottle of pills... some preservation instinct!

Damn good question....maybe they wanted to make sure they remained in the plane until they reached there target. Would'nt be very successful if they fell out of the plane....

Seatbelts were locked on by superiors before take off and they had only enough fuel to reach their target area.
