Animals don't automatically dislike each other. There's some INSTINCT there but Nurture can overcome Nature when it comes to fondness and friendships. Cats and dogs that don't dislike the other species CAN become friends. They become "family" when raised together and can be fiercely loyal to one another.
Why? Tthey're emotional beings -- just like us -- and form emotional bonds and attachments just like we do. It's not such an odd concept. They can love US, and we can love them, and two completely differen species. So can dogs + other animals / cats + other animals, etc. You hear of the odd pairings of animal friendships all the time.

Dogs are pack animals, and contrary to popular belief, cat's are quite social as well. When they live happily together in our homes they have one thing in common, their love for us (humans). They, like children, are products of the environment they live in. Happy home life + good care = happy pets!
We now have one cat and one dog. Up until a year ago it was one cat and two dogs. They get/got along well and have/had no problem communicating with one another, or understanding how we communicate with them. They have formed a family within our family. They love and nurture one another and even snitch on each otherto a degree.
Either way they are both much loved, important members of our family.

I have a 10 year old golden that loves cats. I had cats when I got her as a puppy and they got along great.. My cat was constantly trying to groom her. They just had very similar personalities.. I think it helps if they are raised around them. I have another dog that hates cats, and she wasn't raised around them.. I think it all depends on the dog, and their temperament.

I've known a number of puppies who were pretty much raised and trained by cats- and they get along well. I also used to know a dog who adored kittens. The only danger was that she might swallow them in her over-enthusiasm to mother them: She was a big dog.
It really depends on the individual animals.

Because they get along, they're the nice type of pets. They don't bother fighting.
