My kids stopped sleeping with me around the age of 2-3. And this was only if I accidentally fell asleep with them on the couch or something in the afternoon.
Nighttime is my alone time. Time to catch up on laundry, watch a scary movie, read a book. Having 5 kids and 2 on the way - I NEED that time!
We have nightly regimens, and schedules. My kids share rooms (yes, boys with boys & girls with girls, and bunkbeds), therefore they talk each other to sleep in their rooms. This keeps them independent, yet bonded as a family.
It's not that I don't love my kids - I do very much. It's just that children should learn the value of independence.

First I would let the girl design her own bed...make it something really special to her. Then I would make her a pillow with her mother's face on it.
-All you have to do is take a picture to a shop that does T-shirt transfers but instead on transfering the pic to a shirt, transfer it to a pillowcase-
Finally, I would get a set of walkie talkies so that the girl knows if something were to scare her...mom is just a call away.
Hopefully, this will be a step in the gradual process of weening her off sleeping the bed with her mom.

In other countries it is totally normal for the entire family to sleep together. My husband is first-generation born in the U.S. and he slept with his entire family until he was quite a bit older than 10, especially in summer when they would all sleep on a mat under the ceiling fan. He's totally well-adjusted. As long as there isn't any abuse going on in that bed, it's fine.

This is perfectly normal - once the natural feeling of autonomy kicks in, the children will prefer to sleep on their own.

the mother needs to talk to her/him. there may be something going on that she may not know about. hidden secrets can manifest themselves into many different things, even attachment issues.
right now the most important thing to do is just talk to the child and identify the problem, then assure her/him of their safety.
