take an alcohol soaked cotton ball and put on the tick...they will normally let go on their own or die and you can pull it off.

This is a common problem for us up in Minnesota. Simple way is to use tweezers and aim for the head of the tick. You may have to dig into the skin a bit, but you need to take the head of the tick out. This is what we always do when my family got ticks, either on us or our dogs. Hope it works. Nothing else, the tick will fall off when it's full. And afterwards, keep an eye on your dog, just to be sure there were no diseases passed on from the tick.

you never want to pull a tick out. There's a chance the head will be left in. Try covering it w/ vaseline or nail polish. The tick breathes thru its body, so if you cover its body with this stuff it will be forced to let go. Then you can pick it up with the tweezers and drop it in a bowl of water so it'll drown. You'll still want to have it (the tick and the puppy) tested by a vet. Ticks can carry Lyme Disease, which is deadly to pets.

have you tried with tweezers?
or you can try this that i read a few weeks ago from a school nurse, not sure if it works on dogs though...
place a blob of liquid hand soap on a cotton ball. hold the cotton ball over the tick for about 10 seconds then rub back and forth for about 20 seconds. supposedly the tick will adhere to the cotton ball.

heat up a paper clip and burn the tick, since its big itll be easy not to burn the dog. that will cause it to loosen its bite then pull it out with the tweezers, be sure to get its tiny head.

Pour rubbing alcohol over it to convince it to loosen it's grip. Then grab and pull straight out.

If you can just pull it straight out with tweezers.
After I get it out, I like to burn them with a lighter. :P
