Last time we went on a walk it slipped off and could have been a potentially bad situation since we have a pit bull in the neighborhood that hates all other dogs. How tight should it be?

The rule of thumb is so you can comfortably fit two fingers underneath it.
Or, you can try a gentle leader. I use one with my golden retriever because she has a sensitive throat and it works great because it doesn't pull on her throat. You can find them at Petsmart or buy them on-line at www.dog.com

A harness or head harness (like the Gentle Leader) are good options to keep control of your dog without choke collars, etc. The gentle leader prevents pulling very effectively.

I personally use a regular harness, but my beagle's only 25 lbs. You might want the head harness for your dog.

As for the tightness of a regular collar: you should be able to comfortably slip a couple of fingers under a properly tightened collar, but more room than that makes it too easy to slip out of.

You should have the collar tight enough to not be able to slip over his head but loose enough that you can put at least 3 fingers in between the collar and his neck. You will want to make sure it doesn't get too tight and start choking him so if he is growing, be sure to check the space often.

You should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and his neck for large dogs. For puppies, stick with one finger, but check it every week, because puppies have small heads and the collar can slip off.

2 or 3 fingers. since Goldens are classified as a large dog you might want to use a choke collar.

You're supposed to be able to fit 2 fingers between the collar and dog's neck.

I have a yellow lab, and I get a choke collar cause he's squirlly and will run when he gets lose, I wouldn't take him out in the neighborhood till you get him on the leash and hes calm, try walking him around the house with it on, or the backyard..hope it works for ya!

Yup, just about enough room for 2 fingers to fit. Make sure it's a good, strong collar though: there are dogs out there who know how to stretch and break them, and are strong enough to do it.

Otherwise, you could consider a harness or a choke collar.

Good luck!

you should really get a choke collar. it doesnt actually choke the dog and they learn to stay beside you. if it bothers you [the metal] you can go to a local dog show [or dog supply store, perhaps] and get a material choke collar. i say dog show because thats what you use when showing a dog and they usually have booths set up of local sellers with lots of things.
