There are two predominant ways in which people are deemed to be in the US illegally - either they enter the country illegally, or they enter the country legally, then lose their legal status.
The majority of foreign nationals who enter the US illegally come as economic migrants; they are searching for a better way of life, and for opportunities that simply are not available in their own countries. The US is an attractive alternative to other western countries because it has such diverse population centers - many immigrant populations are already well established. Another reason is the land border with Mexico. The huge expanse of often isolated shared border with Mexico has provided a relatively easy crossing for millions of Third World nationals. Intending illegal immigrants from all over the world try to enter Mexico in order to cross into the US across the land border. Others, with more resources, attempt to enter Canada in order to cross into the US through the northern land border.
Illegal immigration is a highly charged issue. Attempts to stem the tide of illegal immigration have historically been met with strong resistance; logic and law are often obscured by emotional rhetoric. As long as the disparity exists between First World and Third World countries, and as long as intending immigrants are able to enter the US outside of the proper channels, without fear of sanctions, then there will continue to be a problem with illegals.

They're here because this is one of the best countries in the world. We have all the freedoms we could possibly want, money and a great mixed culture of people. We're so close that many illegal immigrants (not just Mexicans) sneak through the Canadian and Mexican border that the US shares with these countries. I think the government is trying to crack down but there's just so much red tape it's going to take time. Unless you're Arizona, the state so pissed off about the whole thing that after that May Day protest they rounded up a group of volunteers and law enforcement officials to find illegals to deport. And they want to build a fence and they are increasing the number of border patrol officers all the time.

Well, the government certainly hasn't done anything about it until quite recently, when they've started to pay lip service to the problem ... and only because they were forced to by the outrage of a lot of people who couldn't understand why our government is aiding and abetting an invasion of illegals ... they are of course here because they know they'll get a job even if they have no paperwork .... and if they want a better job, they can always fake somebody else's papers, or steal them ... who cares, as long as they get what they want? I'll tell you ...you just TRY and do the same in Mexico ... or in ANY other country for that matter ...

From what I understand it is the gov. fault, they have a huge sign in Mexico that say Go to Springdale, Arkansas they have a lot of jobs in factories. We have Tyson, George and Wal-mart headquarters here, just to name a few. The gov. gives them everything for free, why not. But if we went down to Mexico we wouldn't get any freedoms the illegals here get...

It's partly government and failure to regulate, and partly corporations that are trying to sell our government on the merits of letting em come in. We, The People, are being sold a bill of goods, a-gain. Time to send it back marked 'no payment due'...

I believe it is the goverments, when they had this big rally. INS should of been there arresting them . The USA give them food stamps, money, ID's they can go to school, there is grant for them to start a business. The goverment don't offer us this.

Global warming. It's getting to hot in the south so they're migrating. We should sympathize with them, turn on the air conditioning and let them cool off.
