Eight was my favorite age for my kids -- old enough to be able to do things with me and feel very grown up, but still young enough to snuggle with me on the couch while we watch movies.
My youngest is 9, and he STILL leans up against me and wraps up in a quilt on movie night.
And yet... I know what you mean. His big sisters (15 and 18) eventually got too big to snuggle with Dad, and so will he. So every time we sit down to watch a movie, I treasure it as if it were the last, because one day it will be, as it was with his sisters.
I encourage you to find a hobby or activity that you both like, and that has some room for you both to grow. For each of my kids, we have special things that are just for us. My oldest is a classic film buff (she is planning to study film in college), so we have great conversations about Kurosawa and Hitchcock, she recommends movies to me and we keep expanding our knowledge. The 15-year-old is our musician (sax, voice and piano), but lately she and I have become gym buddies -- she works out at the health club with me and we're keeping track of the weights we lift and our time on the cardio machines. And the 9-year-old helps me work on my cars -- he's a demon with interior detailing, and we make models together on the weekends.
So as your son gets older and develops more skills and interests, think of ways to stay involved with him -- a sport, a hobby, a craft, an art form. Now's the time to set up the next few years, and the best can be yet to come.
Excuse me, I need to help my oldest bake a cake for her best friend's birthday...
