Check device manager . If theres no question mark then the drivers are ok but the microphone has gone wrong.

You might try going to the control panel, then sounds and audio devices. Once there, click on microphone. Uncheck the "muted" box if it is checked. I have to do this almost every time I want to use the mic. I think you can also click the mic icon on the bottom taskbar and it might take you there. I think you can click the volume icon on the bottom taskbar to make sure it is turned up, too.
