I tried that with several cats, and they all just ran away, or were killed by cars or other animals. Indoor cats have much longer lifespans than outdoor cats, and with all of today's dangers, it's really better to leave your cat inside.

I have also been fuzzy on the topic of indoor/outdoor cats. Being an owner of two outdoor cats and having many others in the past, I think I may be able to shed some light (ha ha...) on your question. If your cat is a kitten, you can let him outside while watching him and let him become familiar to your neighborhood. If he is an adult cat, he will most likely be out for long periods at a time getting used to the sights and smells. To answer your question, indoor cats are definitely capable of training to be outdoor cats.

My cat has been an indoor cat all his life. He is now four years old and likes to go outside from time to time just to go to the bathroom or to enjoy the sun on the porch. He doesnt stray away from the backyward when his out there plain and simply because he is an INDOOR cat and knows it. The first few times stand out there with them so that they can see u and wont then be too intimidated by the outdoor surroundings. If ur not out there with them thats when u run into the risk of the cat freaking out and not knowing where to turn or go resulting in them obviously getting lost. Think of it as going outside with a toddler.

It depends on the cat. Some will run away and get lost. Others will get hurt or killed. Some learn how to stay in "their" yard - some won't. And indoor cats also don't know necessarily WHAT to be afraid of. Dogs, cars, other cats, other critters, scary people, etc. Indoor cats are usually majorly loved, so they think other "things" love them, too, since they're safe and protected inside (except for that horrible vacuum monster that sneaks in and tries to attack every so often) Indoor cats are usually perfectly happy to REMAIN indoor cats if that's all they've ever known -- and they live longer and are healthier, to boot.

A lot of people have outdoor cats and they seem to do fine, but I keep my cats inside. With outside cats I would always be wondering when is the day they wont come home either because they got ran over or someone else took them home. In my opinion, cats should be kept inside where it is safe.

No, they will not. They will die, get eaten, get lost, get sick, get killed, or get scared and run back inside. Its like... you were born on Earth. Raised on Earth, etc etc. Then someone put you on Mars. Thats how different the indoor world from the outdoor world to a cat. If he was trained for indoor, keep him indoor.

Keep your cat inside unless you want it dead, blacklisted by every humane society in the area and possibly a criminal charge filed against you for animal neglegence.

Occasionally you'll even get a law suit if your cat caused a vehicle accident before it was smashed by a two ton car driving over it's soft ribcage, crushing it's lungs into it's throat and typically smashing it's face all over the ground.

Not pretty,but honest.

indoor only. if they go outdoors they can catch a lot of diseases. I had a cat die of something he caught from another cat during a fight outside.

i think that it depends on how long they have been indoors. Some cats that are already accustomed to being indoors might get scared and run away.

My cats stay indoors: I see too many nutcases locally who think the road is the Indy racetrack! Not to mention some of the neighbors seem to think it's cute to take small critters and dump them.
