Maybe they are more courageous at night or they are afraid of the headlights ....or maybe the noise does not let them sleep...maybe the homeless will do the same if they could bark.

i cant say about why do they bark in the usa but here in India the number of vehicles in daytime is much more than that during the night time so feeling awkward, they bark at those vehicles
another reason may be that as the visibility during the night is poor so the dogs may be runover by the vehicles,which perhaps the dogs could sense 7 thus they bark as a protest

most dogs are a watchdogs so when they are outside out night they bark at random things i know this because i have my own dog and i am 14 and i left him out one night and he started randomly barking

there r alot of cars during the day so they r use to them it is probably the lights, sound & it is less of them & night
