Take the quiz from Dog Breed Info Center. It will recommend the best kind of dog for you. It takes into account your living environment, the size of the dog, the length of hair, etc. Here is the website http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

You have to decide what you like in a dog, first. There are a lot of books available that can help you know what different breeds of dogs are generally like. That does not mean that a particular animal will fit what the breed is known for, though. Every dog is an individual, just like people are.

Once you settle on a breed, you can then ask around for reputable breeders of that kind of dog. This will help you to avoid puppy mills. Breeders, especially good ones, can be very expensive, however. You might also consider looking for dog rescues for that breed, since adoption will be less expensive, and typically the dogs have been kept in homes, so the "foster owners" can tell you what the dog's personality is really like, and what is charming or problematic about Fido.

If you don't care so much about breeds, go to a shelter. Those animals need homes, and often you can find purebred animals there. The staff might be able to tell you about the animal's habits and how friendly/well-behaved he/she is. The cost is also MUCH lower at shelters.

This depends on a lot of things:

If you want a large dog, some good choices are Labradors, Collies, Golden Retrivers, and Labradoodles. Most of the hybrid dogs crossed with poodles are great dogs because poodles are intelligent and don't shed hair or pet dander.

A great small dog is a Shih Tzu or a Schnauzer. They are some of the more quiet and laid back of the toy group and are typically pretty intelligent.

I have two labradors, a Shih Tzu, and a German Shepard/Border Collie. The great features about the Labs, is that they look wonderful, they are so loyal, and they have a lot of funny human like characteristics and expressions. They are a very intelligent breed. The Shih Tzu, my mom wanted and I didn't think I would like it, I have always been a big dog person. She surprised me. She rarely barks, and she lives to please us. She is very intelligent, a real fast learner and is very friendly. Charlie, our mutt, is a good dog, but the Border Collie in him makes him a bit wild. He is very, very loving though.

it all depends on what you want the dog for. do you want a lap dog? if so look at some of the smaller breeds. do you want a dog that you can take to the park or go hunting with? get a sporting dog.

you also have to look at how much room you have for a dog, if you have any other pets or small children.

once you decide on what kind of breed you want figure out if you want an outgoing puppy or one that wont leave you and if you want a male or female. go and see the puppies once they are up and walking around if you can and choose one that way.

and it doesnt matter the color of dog. the color wont affect how the dog acts. [as in labs, theres yellow, black and chocolate. its the dog itself that makes the difference.]

This not only depends on the dogs looks, but also on the size of the place you're liven at, the amount of money you're willing to spend on the dog. And how much time you want to spend with the dog.
Other than that pick a dog that fits all these catagories and matches the bulk of your wordrob. I think it's sexy when women have dogs that match skin tone and have playful personalities that match their pets.

Labradors are easy to train and are really nice with other dogs and kids. Blue Heelers or Austrailian Cattle Dogs (same thing, different name) are really good dogs too. I have one. I would recomend getting a dog from a shelter though because those dogs deserve a second chance.

They are ALL good dogs... Everyone will push their favorite breed, but they might not be the best for *you*. Check out a kennel club like the AKC: http://www.akc.org

There, you can research all of the breeds, health issues, temperament, habits, likes and dislikes, and then, you can go forward with your search for the dog of your dreams.

Even if you get a mixed-breed rescue ( http://www.petfinder.com ) it is good to research the breeds that are included in your dog, as they will likely have the characteristics and health issues of both.

Good luck!

I have two Chihuahuas are they are the best dogs. Everytime I see them, they get so excited to see me. It's like they haven't seen me in years, even though it's been 30 minutes.

Also they are very good at alerting me to snakes. I've caught and killed 5 snakes because of them. Otherwise I would have been bitten since they were slithering close to my house.

They are also so fun to play with. So much energy but knows when to stop. Unlike my Australian Shephard that is driving me nuts.

It depends on a lot of factors. How big is the living space? How much training are you willing to do with your dog? How much exercise do they need? Do they do well in your environment? How much personal interaction are you willing to give? Is the dog for companionship or security? For me, a dashchund was perfect for my lifestyle. For my friend, a Great Pyrenees was what he needed to watch his goats. Make a list of what you can do and how much time you can allot, then research breeds that fit your situation.

From age 7 to 19 I grew up with a Miniature Schnauzer. That dog climbed hills, went camping with his own homemade backpack. wrestled, and slept undercover with me until I went to sleep.

If you want a small, tough, and smart dog my suggestion is the Miniature Schnauzer.
