They didn't. God killed a goat for their covering. The fig leaves were the first act of religion, man attempting to cover his own sins by his own means. God killing the goat taught Adam and Eve an invaluable lesson; that bloodshed was necessary for the redemption of sin. When sin became so great that animal sacrifice couldn't cover it, He sent His Son to die for all sin for all time. He realized that animals didn't have free will, but Jesus would, so in His obedience, Jesus set the standard for repentance under grace through water baptism as a symbol of washing one's sins (including their fig leaf religious ones) away.
