Cream. Something light...maybe even pale yellow. You'll want it bright and cheery.

White gets dirty.

Other colors might be hard to match your decor. Keep that in mind. (Especially reds)

Anything dark is going to be depressing. Not to mention dark colors make the room look small.

Licensed interior designers and color consultants consider the direction a room faces. Whether it is north, south, east, or west, makes a great deal of difference to the choice of color scheme.

For instance, a bedroom that faces east and receives strong sunlight in the early morning will look very different when next seen late at night in artificial lighting. A west-facing room that has a warm glow in the evening can look dull in the mornings. Your choice do colors should take this into account.

Of course, an ideal aspect is not always possible for everyone. City flats may enjoy little naturally available light and be overlooked on all sides. A north-facing room can expect less sun than a south or west facing one; but whatever the aspect, with clever lighting and color scheming the interior can be made to feel welcoming and attractive.

The style of house you live in can also make a great deal of difference to the amount of available light in an interior. A country cottage may be in a superbly sunny location but have low ceiling and tiny windows, which can make the interior, feel dark and gloomy.

Modern homes with spacious open-plan interior and large picture windows will be even more affected by their characteristic and seasonal changes. If there is a living room with a patio or conservatory attached which is used as an additional seating area during the summer but not in winter, the decor will have to be flexible enough to accommodate the changes. For people in doubt over lighting and color schemes some top interior designers suggest painting a room white before making a final color choice.

This is a good way to observe how changes in natural light affect an interior and helps you make the most of it when choosing a color scheme. Window and walls will appear darker as they only receive reflected light; ceiling always looks darker than walls painted the same color.

The effect of artificial lighting on curtains is better seen if a sample gauge of fabric is pleated and held upright. Put samples flat on the floor and move them around the room to see how different positions and lighting conditions can affect the color.

red makes you hungry
green and yellow make you nervous
blue is calming
pink is settling

It is so hard to figure out one certain color for a room because people always change their minds. Also, it is hard to pick one color that matches all the other rooms. So, you should pick a neutral color (tan, light brown, cream, off-white, white, etc.) and highlight it with whatever color you choose(choc.brown, green, black, blue, burgandy.) To highlight, make the drapes the highlight color and the decorations and everything else you want. That way, it is much easier to replace the decorations than to repaint the walls. It will also match the rest of the house. Good luck.

hi im a decorator, and as there are colours that trick the brain eg red is romance, anger. but the best colour for somewhere that ur going to be in most of the time would be a nice calm colour, like Gardinia or Magnolia, or try a soothing brown but a light 1, or 2 tone so 40% at the bottom of a dark brown and 60% at the top in a light brown, i know your probably thinking brown errrr but its so effective, the browns are in now and i cant paint enough of them, and as for the wod work go for a Satinwood, in brilliant white, its so calming and soft on the eye. Good Luck Mate

I like warm colors. They seem really inviting. It's a little drastic but I did only one of my walls (in my condo) red. It really warmed the place up and I feel so at peace when I come home. I do hear that red makes you eat more though lol. Yellow and browns are good too... like a toffee brown.

If you like tranqulity I would go with a blue which is a claming color though.

Interesting fact: I do hear that if you paint your ceilings black you will go insane.. so don't do that!

The best wall color for a living room is like a Burgandy color because it sometimes brings out all the other colors you have in your other rooms!

Blue has a calm effect. Also, deep green.......
Plants are pretty with these colors and maybe a aquarium or fish bowl with a beta. You can get blue beta's that will compliment your room and also the plants and the fish will have a calming effect.
