Not a dog for a novice owner; with this breed if you need to ask then you don't have enough experience.

i think any dog makes a good pet...so long as its treated properly!
Ive got a golden lab and a spaniel.....Gypsy, the Labrador moults in a huge way! My 5year old son has asthma so i had all the floors done in laminate flooring so i could sweep and mop the floor every day (about 10times a day at the moment!!) this way it didn't interfere with my sons asthma.
Also, my kids have never been allowed to pull any of our animals around, after all, as placid as i am i would only take the pulling around bit from someone for a while b4 i snapped!!
Japanese Akita's are beautiful dogs, but i think they are more of a working dog? They are very headstrong and stubborn, so they can probably be quite hard work? Labradors are very clever, sometimes to clever but they make wonderful pets & working dogs, same as spaniels (and 100's of other breeds!!)
Im sure that if you got a Japanese Akita from a pup (make sure its not a puppy farm!!) everything would be fine so long as you and your family give the dog the respect that you want back from it!

It depends on what you want from them.. If you like your house kept quiet warm then as it has a great coat on them is not perfect for that..
They are large dogs that need plenty of exercise from a responsible adult only.. I say this as they are big and can be dangerous if they choose to be... Other people might be concerned to see younger children walking it even if your dog is fanatic.. So it means you will be the one every day walking it.
As they are the larger dog breeds they tend to have shorter life spans than smaller breeds.. SO be prepared for a shorter companion for the kids (I know they all have to go sometimes but its always harder with children)
They need a lot of brushing as they have a very thick under coat. This is very messy as it comes out in clumps and it is far easier to send it to a groomer which will cost around £35 at least four times a year. Bathing it too is a big chore better left to the groomer as they do not dry easy due to the thick under coat..
They will need to be trained well any dog no matter what breed is only good with children because of its training and upbringing.. As this is a large breed it is just not acceptable to have it running riot it just too big...
All that said.. They are very cleaver, playful and energetic dogs. Beautiful to look at and great to have as a soul mate if you spend the time training them.. They do need a lot of work and attention so before getting the puppy think about whether the dog suites your life style or whether you want it for the way it looks.. I hope you find the perfect dog for you and your family.. May I suggest that you look in local rescue centres as they always have the most perfect friends in there for everyone if you want to wait until they turn up.. :-)

With firm and consistent handling and training they can make great pets, but they are generally NOT recommended as family pets. They require daily grooming and need a lot of exercise.

No they can be very vicious. One savaged a little girl on our street and had to be destroyed. There are lots more breeds which make better pets. You can never be too careful where children are concerned.

i have known three of them, owned by friends.
They were all wonderful family dogs.
Be sure to get from a reputable breeder, and make sure the parents of the litter are just like the dog you want.
