I am Indonesian but I have Studied both Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia since Young.

In my Opinion, Melayu is actually easier to learn. However, Indonesian is Smoother. What I mean is that, for us Indonesian, the choice of words that Bahasa Melayu use is Very crude. We Indonesian (the proper language) is more polite that Melayu.

A lot of people believe that you are able to understand B. Indonesia, You will be able mostly about B. Melayu. HOpe that Helps ^-^

*Notes for other people: Sometimes people just type "Bahasa". They think that Bahasa means Indonesian, but Bahasa also means Malaysian, too. Bahasa itself means "language" in English. So, sometimes I get confused.

1) As a former Indonesian, I can tell that both Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia are easy. In fact, I believe that both of them are the easiest language in the world (no tenses, no genders, no confusing plurals, etc.).

But sometimes, you can say that Bahasa Melayu is easier than Bahasa Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia is a language that is invented. Bahasa Indonesia is adopted from Bahasa Melayu and transformed other languages (such as English, Dutch, Spanish) into new words. That's why sometimes Bahasa Melayu is easier than Bahasa Indonesia (you know, Bahasa Melayu is recognized earlier than Bahasa Indonesia).

2) Bahasa Melayu is the official language of Malaysia.
The official language of Indonesia is called Bahasa Indonesia.
