Last night I applied some salycilic acne medication to affected areas on my face. When i woke up and washed it off, some areas that I applied it to made my skin darker there and now it looks horrible...like I have bags not under my eyes but one on my chin and one on my cheek. I applied Neosporin to the areas already, but can you please help me if you know why this happened and if it will clear up and about how long? Thank you, I'm really worried over this and I appreciate even more help/ answers.

An answer like that (Answerer #1) is really not helpful, I feel as bad as I can as it is. Please, only "real" answers please.

In the lab, we use SSA (salycilic acid) to take protein out of urine. You've basically burned your skin with the acid. Probably milder, but similar to any other acid burn .You really have to use it sparingly or not at all, you may be allergic. You'll just have to wait for it to heal. Hopefully, you don't scar easily. Even try some aloe.

Your skin could be sensitive to the medication and is just reacting to it. Discontinue its use, and watch the affected areas and see if they begin to lighten. This should occur fairly rapidly and if you do not notice improvement, go see a dermatologist.

Beta-hydroxy Acid (Salicylic Acid)

Salicylic acid has been studied for its effect on skin that has aged prematurely due to exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun. It exfoliates skin, and can improve the texture and color of the skin. It penetrates oil-laden hair follicle openings and, as a result, also helps with acne. There are many skin care products available that contain salicylic acid. Some are available over-the-counter and others require a doctor's prescription. Studies have shown that salicylic acid is less irritating than skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids, while providing similar improvement in skin texture and color. As with AHA, it is advised to apply sunscreen every morning when using salicylic acid products.

Warning: People who are allergic to salicylates (found in aspirin) should not use products containing salicylic acid. This is due to the fact that salicylic acid can be absorbed into the bloodstream and may cause an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. Pregnant or nursing women should talk to their doctor before using any products containing salicylic acid.

Neosporin won't help since it is an antibiotic and you don't have an infection. What might help would be to lightly apply a low strength hydrocortisone cream for a day or so but your two best choices are to either leave your skin alone for a couple days and hope it gets better (likely) or see your dermatologist and see what they have to say.

People try to make ACNE a problem, I'm convinced. My Mom told me, and in my 40's I still do it today, take a wash cloth, put it under a hot water of a spigot and keep applying the hot cloth to the acne, until it's dissolved.

you may be allergic to the salicylic acid...try benzoyl peroxide for acne.
