If they believe in what they believe, why should it matter what any book says other than the bible?

daver: thanks for the response. I think the issue is still the same, given your clarification. So let me rephrase: If the Catholic beliefs are true and wonderful, shouldn't those "on the fence" FLOCK to it as the spiritual answer the Church claims it to be?

Because there will be a segment of the readers who will want to read the NON-fiction books that make the same claims as the Da Vinci Code and provide evidence and informed speculation to back it up.
That's why--they are afraid that the novel will serve as a gateway to questioning Catholic Dogma.

You don't seem to understand the issue.
Devout Catholics are not concerned about "The Da Vinci Code" damaging their church, or forcing educated catholics to question their faith.
The danger is with Christians who are "on the fence" as far as their faith goes; the ones who would like to believe and even become Catholic, but are then lead away from the Faith by a slanderous piece of fiction.
That is the real threat and the real concern of devout Catholics. They aren't worried about a work of fiction bringing down their church. It won't cause them to question their faith. In true selfless Christian form, they are concerned about the those who desire to know God, but because of their lesser degree of devotion to God, and lack of knowledge about the True Catholic Church, some might be lead astray and, potentially, not be saved.
Wouldn't you say that was legit cause for concern?

It isn't only the Roman Catholic church that is insecure over a fictional book. Read any Harry Potter lately?

I really don't think it's that insecure. Even though it is a work of fiction, many people take it as a fact, and many more people will see the movie probably than will actually sit down and read the Bible.

Given the fact that the Bible does indeed have a great deal of fiction in it itself, naturally the Church would be nervous.

Just consider that muslims, when they see something like that, give an order to execute the author. I suppose that you will say that they are VERY insecure

it is fiction posing as a factual. It will get people off the devine track and make them believe lies.
