She's thirteen years old, and we've had her since I was seven. She's really my sister's baby, but she's stuck at work so I'm on deathbed vigil. I keep hoping she'll recover, but her back leg's paralayzed I think, she can't walk, can't breathe very well. I hate watching her like this- has anybody else been through this?

We're scared to move her, i.e. to go to the vet, casue she gets worse even when we change postitions. Dying at home I guess?

Oh, I am so sorry... If it were me, I would take her to the vet and end her suffering. I know it's hard to watch them go through this when they've been part of the family for so long. It doesn't hurt them, and they literally just "go to sleep". I've held all of my dogs when they were put down. There's no pain... a small prick of a needle, and then it's over, and they are at peace.

You can put her on a blanket and use it like a stretcher to carry her to the car. Best wishes to you all...

If you are unable to take her to the vet (mine charges $38 to put a dog to sleep) you just sit with her and stroke her. Rub your hands over her and tell her of your love. Wipe her face if she drools, and put a spoon of water on her tongue to keep her mouth moist. If she isn't blinking, you can put a warm washrag on her eyes, to keep them from getting too dry.
Just you being with her and showing her your love will make her passing easier.
It sounds like she might have had some kind of stroke, so she may not unerstand everything you say, but she will feel your heart loving herWeh she goes, she will have no more pain, and she will wait for you on the other side.

Call the veterinary office and explain your situation. He will probably make a house call in a case like this, or send out a vet tech. The dog needs to get help, or be put to sleep.

The kindest thing is to put her down.

Edit: Call the vet and ask if he's willing to stop by the house to do the job. Putting an animal to sleep is a pretty quick one-two step task.

Oh yes.... four times and it does not get any easier... I keep thinking of the wonderful times we had to together.....of the good life that I gave my beloved dog and yet, I have that horrible guilty feeling that continues after the pet's death. Nothing much anyone can say to relieve my grief but in time, the main part of the hurt goes away but good memories will live on forever.

For the love of God! Put that poor creature to sleep!! Dogs, by nature, are loyal and love unconditionally. Don't you think she deserves the same from you? You guys need to remember, this isn't about you or how you'll feel about doing it. It's about doing what is best for your dog. It's hard to do, I know, but when quality of life becomes an issue, it's the greatest act of love there is.

If you are unsure about moving her, call the local vet offices, and see if anyone is willing to do a house visit. It's rare, but you might have luck there.
Other than that, get her in the car and on the way to the nearest vet....Take your time, for then it doesn't stress her breathing, but it's best for her. Death due to inability to breathe, is a horrible way to die.

Put her to sleep. It's the right thing to do. I had a cat that lived to be 17. Same thing for him too. Take the pain away for her. She'll thank you some day on the other side. :)
