If I were you I would look at either a Labrador, or a Labradoodle. They are both wonderful dogs. Labradoodles are much like Labradors except they have many different kinds of coats, some are almost just like a Lab's coat, some are a bit longer and shaggy, and some are very long and curly. One big difference is that Labradoodles about 85% of the time don't shed or give off pet dander so they won't aggitate allergies. Shih Tzu's are very good family dog's as far as small dogs go. I would look into it more in books and on the internet to see which dog will fit your needs. Don't forget that shelter dogs are a great option. They need the help and are usually some of the best dogs that you can ever find.

Best Dogs To Own

I myself love collies and shelties. Collies are beautiful, sensitive animals. My collie came from a collie rescue and now I also foster collies for rescue. A collie, or any other dog, may not be the perfect dog for everyone. You have to take size and activity level into consideration. Do you mind brushing a dog? Do you have a large or small yard? Do you want your dog to have special talents? Do you want a hunting dog, an agility dog, a herding dog? A dog that can be taught tricks? Obedience? A show dog? High energy level or low? If you want a dog that is already housebroken, low energy, and past the chewing stage you might want to adopt an older dog. Puppies are cute, but the are alot of work. They need to be watched every minute to be kept out of trouble and to be taken outside for potty. There are many website with questionaire to answer that will tell you the best breeds for your lifestyle.

Really research a dog before you get one. Check all breeds for care, temperament, breed problems, etc. If you don't have the time or means to take care of a dog, do yourself a favor and the dog by not getting one. Too many are given up because owners tire of them, can't train them, find they do not fit in the family, find them too expensive to groom or to pay for when medical bills come along. I have two little dogs. After shots, some grooming, vet bills, food or special food, licenses, etc. I am sometimes broke. Dogs are full time. Cat's do not require nearly the work. Really think this over.

Yea I have a dog..well, puppy. 14 weeks old-chihuahua. Male. He's kind of been a pain lately. I bring him to work (I'm a Nanny) and the parents just bought a female (spayed) puppy for there kids so yea, he's hyper all the time and thinks he doesn't have to listen to me for some reason. As soon as he gets home where there are no dogs though, he's fine. Go figure! Maybe once I Get him 'fixed' he will be a better listener and calm down a bit.!!

The best dog for families and cats, any animal for that matter is a Lab. The color doesn't matter. Just avoid the thinner, sleeker ones, they tend to be the hyper ones. The larger, English style ones are the ones that are calm, kid friendly dreams. They do shed, but really only 2 weeks, twice a year. Just brush them daily and you can keep it under control. Start with a puppy, don't try to break the bad habbits instilled by another owner. Good luck.

I have a black lab (Scooby), and I'll tell you, he is the best kind of dog in the whole world. I have 6 kids, 2 cats and a rabbit, and he loves them all. You will enjoy and love him to bits. The only thing with him is he sheds quite a bit, so vacuuming will be a daily chore, at times twice a day!
