They all claim that they will operate all of your components (tv, cable box, dvd, etc.) from the one remote. I have tried two different universals and programmed each as instructed to the letter. Neither worked. One turned each component on and off but would not allow you to switch between components. The other could not even be programmed to turn things on and off correctly. These were both name brands. What gives?

Is there such a thing as a universal remote that actually works? - Yes, I own one. I purchased a Kameleon Touch-Screen Universal Remote at Radio Shack. One-For-All also sells a Kameleon, they make the Radio Shack unit. It works great, can be remotely upgraded and can learn buttons from other remotes.

Logitech Harmony remotes work pretty well with few kinks, i have 3 one i use ,the other ones i ve given to my parents who seem to like them. All remotes come with disc and you program them on line with all your model numbers and how you turn on different things etc and it sets up from there. I ve had a few quirks nothing major and its one of the few remotes that are universal that ive liked

I have the xbox harmony remote it turns on tv then my xbox then my reciever switches tv automatically to componanet, then if i want to watch tv it switches to tv then turns on cable box and switches reciever to the right setting ittakes a little set up time but it allows a great deal of freedom and less heartache.

Yes, there is, when programmed well at least it should turn off/on your components. But not all functions might work perfectly
