Your body nees certain essential vitamins and minerals to survive. You get most of these in the food you eat. Sometimes, because of bad diet, the body is missing some of these nutrients, or is not receivng enough. Then the body shuts down some of its functions, and you get sick. For example, the body uses calcium to build and repair damaged bones. Without this mineral, bones get weak and brittle.

In this example, adding calcium to a diet lacking in it, will make the person more healthy.

Part of your question suggests that you want to know if taking EXTRA vitamins will make you healthIER. It really depends on if you are getting enough of the vitamins YOUR body requires.

If you are thinking of taking some random vitamin supplement, you may not get the result you hope for. Some vitamins, taken in excess, may cause harm. Most of the time, this won't happen because the vitamins the body doesn't need just get pissed out. But, if you are really worried about which ones may hurt, you must get medical advice.

Younger people usually don't need these supplements if they are eating properly. Money is wasted on those expensive Flintstone, Barney or other products sold. Older folks may enjoy the benifits of a supplement because their bodies don't work as efficiently as when they were younger.

If you are already healthy, and are eating properly, then vitamin supplements won't do anything for you.

Yes, as long as your getting your vitamins from the foods source, and not processed vitamins broken down at a factory. If you eat food and take vitamin pills, your body is working a little harder compromising the situation of the wrong food type with the wrong vitamins. Vitamins like Vitamin A, come in different forms from different sources and all are not alike from the sources that they do come from.If your vitamin pill's source came from a purple beet, and your eating just meat, then the vitamin well not process with you as good, if your were to eat a beet instead.

Eat well, and mindfully.

Vitamins alone don't magically make you healthy. They help you become healthier assuming you are eating the right foods and excercising regularly. They work in unison with a generally healthy lifestyle.
