The warnings state that cigarette smoking while pregnant can cause premature birth and low birth weight. Science has proven that second hand smoke can kill. Smoking is never good for anyone. It is easy enough to keep it away from children once they are born, just go outside. During pregnancy it is harder.
My first pregnancy was planned and I had quit smoking 2 years before I got pregnant (it took a long time to get pregnant). I had a lot of problems and she was premature (she is fine now). My next two pregnancies were both surprises (where never even supposed to be able to happen), and I had not quit prior to getting pregnant. My doctor actually told me not to quit because of all the problems I had with my first pregnancy. He was afraid that it would be too much of a shock on my body to just quit. Instead, he told me to slowly cut back and smoke weaker cigarettes so as not to stress out my body. Both of those pregnancies went full term (one went a week over) and both babies were good size (one was 7 lbs. 13 oz. and the other was 9 lbs. 1 oz.). Both girls are healthy and are both in the gifted programs at their schools and test way above average.
I am not advocating smoking during pregnancy. It is always best to quit before you get pregnant. But, if you find yourself pregnant and you smoke, check with you doctor before you do anything.

Yes, smoking can damage the unborn baby and it that has been proven. You're right - it's awful to think that someone is smoking in the same room as a 6 month old. People who can't give up smoking really should reconsider having babies. In fact, they shouldn't be allowed to have kids at all.

Any smoking when pregnant or when the baby is born up to the age of 18. You should not smoke ever when pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
My friends son was born with everything perfect after living in a house for 4 years with both parents and most guests smoking he now has asthma and eczema.

All of the anti smokers that have answered this question say it has been proven that smoking is so bad for you and the child yet I'd say the majority of them have not smoked themselves so only read about it. There are far worse things for your child than cigarette smoke such as bad diet, lack of love and other forms of abuse. If you don't want to smoke in the same room then don't.

I think anyone that smokes in the same room as their children is wrong. My daughter is 16 mths old and my partner is now 6 mths pregnant. I quit smoking 5 mths ago for the sake of my children after a 10 year habit and even when i did smoke it would never be anywhere near my girl.
Now I have quit smoking I'm the biggest anti-smoker ever.
QUIT SMOKING EVERYONE.

Second hand smoking is horrible no matter how much someone inhales, it can gives people asthma, and other dieases people will get from smoking. Babys their body just started to grow and it might kill them. It's even worst when the mom is smoking with the baby still trying to develop.

They say you shouldn't smoke when you are pregnant, but I have had 2 kids and I smoked with both. it depends on how you feel about it. Sometimes you can end up with early labor or nothing could go wrong. your baby could end up with low weight but that's not always. A baby at birth usually weighs between 61/2-10lbs. Both of mine weighed 7-71/2 lbs. Of course both of my children has special needs one more medical than my first. so now I only have my first. My second I gave up because his needs were too great for me to care for. He had a trach and feeding tube. But, please understand that I loved him and it was hard but I wanted him to have the best than what I could ever give him, So I didn't give him up cause I didn't want him, it's just that I couldnt care for him like my first. But remember my first has Special needs as well. Two children with Special needs is difficult than taking care of one.

They're obviously confused. Smoking bothers the baby before its born and FOREVER. Second hand smoke affects everyone. If the child has any kind of problems (asthma) it really makes it worse.

They are trying to kid themselves - They are too selfish to give up smoking, but know that it can do harm to the kid - They think that by leaving the room they will limit the risk, but they won't because the tar sticks around, and is on the mother's clothes and skin.
