When you reference an Excel chart in Word (paste as Link) or VBA the chart is referenced with a number, like "Chart 5". However, Excel seems to assign these numbers in sequence and I cannot figure out how to change them. For example, I want all docs to have "Chart 1" be the Asset chart and all docs to have "Chart 2" be the Equity chart, etc.

MS like to number objects sequentially as you add them and give them default names that include the type of object and the ## ... like chart_1, frame_2, listbox_3 ...

In MS Access and VB, the name of the object is one of the properties that can easily be changed in the properties box that can be selected when you right click on the graph or other object. I do not see a corresponding 'properties' list on graphs in MS Excel.

For labeling purposes, though, you can change the descriptions shown on the chart by right-clicking the chart and selecting 'chart properties' from the list. Unfortunately (at least in v2003) the name of the object is not a changeable chart property ...but the title shown when you view it is.

If you save the individual charts as seperate sheets, however, you can supply your own name for the sheet=chart by either (i) entering a name in the last panel of the chart creation dialog (there is radio button for 'as new sheet' and a text box to enter a name). This becomes the 'sheet name' which you can also change by (ii) doubleclicking the tab name at the bottom of your worksheet and overtyping it with the name of your choice.

Use the save as function under the file tab or after it is saved, go to that file location, click once on the name, then it should allow you to rename it. I believe you can also right click on the file, and see a rename option as well. Good Luck.

If you drag the cells out in order to duplicate them, they will run in sequence. However, if you copy the cell and then select an area to paste them in, they will remain the same.
